Strategy 9 for Staying in the Present Moment: Engage in Flow Activities

Rediscovering Joy in the Everyday

Have you ever found yourself so deeply absorbed in something that you lost all sense of time? Maybe you were painting, gardening, playing an instrument, or even just tinkering with a recipe in the kitchen. That magical state-where the world fades away and you’re completely immersed in what you’re doing-is called flow.

What is Flow?

Flow is more than just being busy. It’s a state of complete focus and enjoyment, where your skills and the challenge at hand are perfectly matched. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who coined the term, described it as being “in the zone.” In flow, you’re not worrying about the past or future. You’re fully present, and life feels richer.

Why Does Flow Matter?

Flow isn’t just about productivity; it’s about fulfillment. When we regularly experience flow, we feel more satisfied, less stressed, and more connected to ourselves. These moments remind us of the beauty of being alive and engaged.

How to Rediscover Your Flow Activities

If you’re not sure what brings you flow,

try this simple exercise:

Reflect on Your Past: Think back to times in your life when you felt completely absorbed in an activity. What were you doing? How did it make you feel?

Experiment: Try new hobbies or revisit old ones. Sometimes, flow comes from unexpected places-writing, gardening, hiking, or even organizing your space.

Notice the Signs: Flow activities usually have a few things in common: you lose track of time, you feel challenged but not overwhelmed, and you finish feeling energized rather than drained.

Promoting Flow in Everyday Life

You don’t have to wait for a free weekend or a rare creative spark to experience flow. Here are a few ways to invite more flow into your daily routine:

Set Clear Goals: Even mundane tasks can become more engaging if you give yourself a clear objective. For example, challenge yourself to cook a new recipe or organize your desk in a creative way.

Minimize Distractions: Turn off notifications, silence your phone, and create a space where you can focus.

Match Challenge to Skill: If something feels too easy, raise the bar. If it’s too hard, break it into smaller steps.

Allow Yourself to Be Present: Give yourself permission to be fully engaged, even if it’s just for fifteen minutes.

A Gentle Challenge

This week, I invite you to notice when you feel most alive and absorbed. What are you doing? How can you make more space for those moments? Life isn’t just about getting things done-it’s about enjoying the journey and finding meaning along the way.
