Life Note Remember to Breathe!
It might seem like a ridiculous reminder, but I’ve learned that sometimes, we need to be reminded to breathe! This became clear to me years ago in yoga classes. I remember how often the instructor would remind us to breathe. Over time, I noticed she seemed to be directing that reminder toward me. When I checked in with my body, I realized why—I was holding my breath! I had stopped breathing without even noticing. But the moment I took a slow, intentional breath, whatever contorted pose I was struggling with suddenly became more accessible.
It took me longer than I’d like to admit to carry that lesson beyond the yoga mat and into daily life. I began to notice that in moments of stress or distraction, I would unconsciously hold my breath or take shallow breaths. But when I intentionally took a slow inhale, followed by a longer exhale, I would immediately feel more relaxed and present. I had practiced focused breathing in meditation, but bringing that practice into my everyday life was transformative.
Try This: A Simple Breathing Technique
- Focus on your breath and inhale for four seconds.
- Hold your breath for a moment.
- Exhale slowly for eight seconds.
- Repeat a few times.
Find a natural rhythm that feels comfortable and continue to focus on your breath.
If your mind wanders during the exercise, gently redirect your attention back to your breathing. This technique can help create a sense of calm, improve focus, and restore energy. Best of all, you can do it anywhere, anytime—without anyone noticing!
The Power of Breathwork
Breathwork has been practiced for centuries to alter consciousness, promote healing, and cultivate spiritual awareness. Ancient yogic traditions in India developed pranayama, a practice of conscious breathing designed to cleanse the body and mind. Tibetan traditions also embraced breathwork, including the Nine Breathing Exercise, which aims to purify energy channels, calm the mind, and develop compassion.
More recently, Wim Hof, known as The Iceman, has popularized the Wim Hof Method, which combines specific breathing techniques with cold exposure. His method, which includes deep inhalations, relaxed exhalations, and breath holds, is believed to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.
If you’re interested in exploring breathwork further, I highly recommend James Nestor’s book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. In it, Nestor delves into ancient breathing techniques and modern scientific research, revealing how something as simple as proper breathing can dramatically improve our health and quality of life.
Final Thought
So, the next time you feel tense, overwhelmed, or distracted—pause and take a deep breath. You might be surprised at how much of a difference it makes.
